North West Regional Archive Strategy

The first regional strategy to develop archive services in the North West was launched by the North West Regional Archive Council, on 25th January 2002 at the 3rd North West Conference on Archival Resources, Edge Hill College. Funded by Resource:The Council for Museums Archives and Libraries, the strategy is the result of research and consultation amongst archive professionals, academics and users. Its overall aim is to improve provision and enhance the experience of archive users throughout the North West in the coming years.

The report describes archive in the region as providing a good service, despite an environment of underfunding, poor facilities and inadequate buildings. The strategy provides solutions for these problems and is centered around 10 themes:

Advocacy,  Partnerships and Regional Development, Collection Development, Access and Availability, Preservation and Conservation, ICT and Innovation, Education and Social Inclusion, Records Management, Electronic Records, Training and Development, Publicity and Promotion.

There are over 30 projects and initiatives proposed in the accompanying action plan, each one addressing the requirements identified in the report. These initiatives will develop and enhance the use of archives in the North West by the public and raise the profile of archive services throughout the region and beyond.

Comments and enquiries on the strategy should be sent to Janice Taylor, Regional Archive Development Officer.

The strategy can be viewed by using Adobe Acrobat reader.
